The long delayed Uncanny X-Men # 600 written by Brian Michael Bendis together with a couple of great Marvel artists have finally hit stands and it left a bitter taste in my mouth being a hardcore X-Fan. Let’s take a look at some of the ramifications that Bendis left that book in.
One of the more controversial things that Bendis has done during his run in X-Men was the outing of Bobby Drake aka Iceman as a gay man. But that didn’t happen for the adult version but rather with the younger, time-displaced Iceman who was sent forward in time by Hank McCoy aka The Beast.
2. Colossus and Magik reconcile
While Bendis had nothing to do with the rift between the Rasputin siblings, he certainly made sure that they stayed clear out of each other. One of the tied-up lose ends for the book set the Piotr and Illyana on a reconcilatory path, with Peter’s former lover Kitty playing “buffer” for the two. One of the more happier things from the book.
3. Kitty and Peter are still not back together
Yeah, you suck Bendis for pairing Kitty and Star-Lord. It’s kinda working though but this writer prefers the classic Peter and Kitty coupling. At least we get some form of closure with Colossus wishing Kitty all the best. It also means there’s a window to return to that pairing sometime in the future.
4. Original Five Beast and Jean Grey Hook Up
Yeah, another poop on readers head before exiting stage right is the pairing of O5 Jean and Hank. And Cyclops seems to act all indifferent to this.
5. Cyclops Still Does his revolution speech.
Yes, under Bendis’ writing, Cyclops unites all the remaining mutants in Washington to actually do nothing. He just makes an announcement and nothing happens. The issue ends like that.
Personally, this author feels like that Uncanny X-Men # 600 was overhyped and falls flat leaving a really bitter, worse-than-amplaya taste in the mouth and its not even funny. It also lost the essence of being titled as “The Trial of Hank McCoy” because it didn’t push in one direction. Beast, also felt like an idiot rather than a super-genius.
Uncanny X-Men # 600 is out in stores this week.
