The trailer for Gothic thriller series Penny Dreadful just dropped, and it looks like this season’s return to the Demimonde is all about getting in touch with one’s dark side.
Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Harry Treadaway, Timothy Dalton, Billie Piper, Rory Kinnear and Reeve Carney return on May 1st, as Showtime picks up on what’s happened since last season left off.
Masquer’s cover of Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me,” plays hauntingly in the background as we’re given an idea of how our heroes and their adversaries have fared:
Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) may be in a padded room, but as opposed to looking trapped, a fairly sensual clip prompts goosebumps as she intones that she’s been “touched by Satan.”
Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), who we last saw on a ship homebound, looks like he’s also due to come to terms with the wolf inside. Maybe that means this season will shed a little more light on Chanlder, especially since Timothy Dalton’s Sir Malcolm teams up with a Native American named Kaetenay (played by Wes Studi) who presumably knows all about the cowboy’s past.
The diabolical duo of Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and Lily/Brona (Billie Piper) seem to be doing pretty well for themselves as well, if the dinner they’re holding is any indicator. Talk is, they even have newcomer of their own among their ranks: Jessica Barden (Far from the Madding Crowd, Hanna) joins this season’s influx of new blood as Justine, Gray and Lily’s acolyte.
There’s a lot in the trailer to get fans wondering what’s in store this year: Who is that with the Creature a.k.a. Caliban a.k.a. John Clare (Rory Kinnear)? What is Harry Treadaway’s Dr. Frankenstein up to this time? And who’s speaking that rather ominous line:
All the broken and shunned creatures, someone’s got to care for them — who shall it be if not us?
Simon Russell Beale and Sarah Greene will also be reprising their roles as Dr. Ferdinand Lyle and Hecate; whereas introductions to Shazad Latif who will play Dr. Henry Jekyll, plus the characters of Christian Camargo, Sam Barnett, and Perdita Weeks are something to definitely look forward to.
