It’s been an awesome week for Mortal Kombat fans as NetherRealm Studios unveiled the return of Brutalities and the official story trailer for Mortal Kombat X.
The official story trailer was also used to reveal more characters that would be making an appearance in Mortal Kombat X. Among those included are Takashi Takeda (Scorpion’s protege), Jacqueline Briggs (Jax’s niece) and Kung Jin (Kung Lao’s descendant). Rain, Mileena, Erron Black, and Shinnok make appearances as well. You can view the story trailer below:
Last seen in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Brutalities were a series of sequential button presses that, when completed, generates a combo that would cause the opponent to explode into a gazillion pieces of bones. This changes in Mortal Kombat X. In MKX, Brutalities are completely different: it’s a combo-able command used to end matches in gory fashion. It can be likened to the Ultimate Combos of Killer Instinct for the Xbox One. Once a match ends with a Brutality, the winner would not get the chance to perform the more cinematic Fatality of his character. There’s currently speculation that this was done to speed up potential MKX tournaments. You can view the Brutalities Reveal video below:
Ed Boon has acknowledged that more characters will be revealed within the next few streams, starting with a Twitter hint that seemingly refers to Johnny Cage. Johnny was leaked in DC Comics’ tie-in MKX comic as the current champion of the Earth realm and can be seen the story trailer above as well.
Mortal Kombat X is currently set to be released on April 14, 2015 for the PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One. High Voltage (the same guys who ported Injustice: Gods Among Us for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita) will be porting the title to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for a same day release. A “Kollector’s Edition” which includes a statue of Scorpion will also be available for the game.
