WAG’s Top 10 Video Games of 2016

Another year has come and gone, so here we are yet again with another Top 10 list. In spite of all the shit that went down last year, 2016 was quite good to gaming. For one, games that have been 10 years in the making – like Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian – were finally released. Did these games make my list? Let’s get the show on the road and see if they made the cut for my Top 10 Video Games of 2016.

Before I begin, let’s make it clear that this is my personal opinion on what games were most interesting to me. You might not see games that you guys liked, or games that you may expect in a Top 10 Video Games list from other websites. With that out of the way, let’s get the ball rolling with number 10!

10: Another Metroid 2 Remake

The first game on my list is a fan remake of the classic Gameboy game: Metroid 2: Return of Samus. The original game had a lot of problems: a confusing level layout, repetitive bosses/enemy encounters, and poor sound design. This VERY ambitious fan remake aimed to fix these problems, and BOY was it successful in remedying these. This game is one of the most amazing fan projects I’ve ever played. It feels and plays almost as if it is an official Nintendo-made product. The game has an amazing soundtrack, newly added areas, and great boss encounters. While the world mostly reuses the map of the original game, AM2R threw in new textures that added a lot to it. Players were also able to do a greater amount of exploration as opposed to the latter games in the franchise (like Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission).

In short, Another Metroid 2 Remake has everything that you’ve come to expect from a proper Metroid title. Hell, this game might even be one of my favorite games in the franchise due to how well it’s made. It was a great experience for fans of the series. Unfortunately, Nintendo issued a cease and desist order against the creator. As such, all support for the project has stopped. It’s a shame, though, because in my opinion, this game deserves to be played.
