Cardcaptor Sakura Sequel Announced!

Calling all mahou shoujo fans! CLAMP has an important announcement for all of us: Cardcaptor Sakura will be getting a sequel!

Last March, Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine announced that CLAMP will be working on a “new project” for the Cardcaptor Sakura franchise in celebration of the manga’s 20th anniversary this year. Just recently, Nakayoshi announced that the series will be getting a manga sequel which will begin publication in June of this year.

There is no word on whether this will be a full-blown series or a short miniseries yet. What we do know is that the manga will star Sakura and her crew during their middle school years! From what we can tell on the flyer (pictured above), Sakura, in her first year of middle school, has a strange dream, which, just like in the anime, preludes a new adventure!

Cardcaptor Sakura originally ran from May 1996 to June 2000. An anime adaptation was produced by NHK, which aired in Japan from April 1998 to March 2000. The series has then produced two movies, and a “spin-off” in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. In celebration of its 20th anniversary, NHK is broadcasting the original anime series on its BS Premium channel. Animate cafés have also put up Cardcaptor Sakura-themed menus since April 1.

Crossing fingers that we’ll get a long series rather than a short one! This is the sequel we’ve all been waiting for since Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles!
