Avengers Disassemble – Captain America: Civil War Official Trailer #1

The official trailer for Captain America: Civil War is finally out and my delicate inner Marvel fangirl is lying in a pool of her own tears.

In the thirteenth installment to Marvel’s ever-growing Cinematic Universe, the Russo Brothers team up with writers Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely (The First Avenger, Winter Soldier, and the Agent Carter TV series) to deliver their take on Civil War. Watch the trailer below:

As someone who followed Mark Millar’s source material released between 2006 and 2007, this trailer’s given me goosebumps to the degree that: 1) I kind of want it to be May right now, but 2) at the same I don’t because I’m pretty sure I’ll need duct tape to piece my heart together.

The universe continuity might be different, but the themes remain the same: following the catastrophic events of Winter Soldier (bye, S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Ultron (levitating cities? NBD) — the world government (as represented by General Ross) has decided to push for a system of accountability where our superpowered heroes are concerned.

Kevin Fiege, President of Marvel Studios, commented in an interview last October 2014, that the cumulative events from all the movies preceding Civil War have “made the governments of the world say ‘we need to have some oversight of these guys. They need to report to somebody. […] It’s not about the secret identity thing, as much as it is about, overall, who reports to who, and who can agree to oversight committee.”

Things that made my heart go WAIT:

  1. I find it’s pretty fricking awesome how setting Bucky Barnes right in the middle of the conflict creates the crux that pits Cap against Tony. It grounds the premise in something that is both personal and political, playing up the question of what (or who) is it that you’re fighting for.
  2. MOTHEREFFING BLACK PANTHER. It’s a shot that’s less than a second but I am so freaking excite to see how they bring him in for this! And while they only show up behind Cap in a glimpse, I can’t help but feel massively excited over what part the “newbies” on the Avengers roster might play. Civil War isn’t just Cap vs. Tony as people, guys — it’s about what they stand for and who decides to follow them to the very end of it.
  3. THAT aldjakfjskf GODDAMN sldjskfjskf LINE at the very end. Thank you very much for the collateral damage on my heart MCU. Thanks, really. Ouch.

Captain America: Civil War is due out in theaters this coming May 2016. Who’s side are YOU on?
