In a shocker announcement during a stockholders meeting, Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger said that the 1st upcoming Star Wars spin-off film will officially be titled Rogue One and that it will star Oscar nominee Felicity Jones.
The spin-off will be written by Chris Weitz and directed by Gareth Edwards. The film will begin production this summer in London and will be released worldwide on December 16, 2016.
The idea for the film’s story came from John Knoll, CCO of ILM and Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor. ComingSoon.net reports that he will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin,War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (“Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific”) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce.
Iger also confirmed Rian Johnson as the writer-director of Star Wars: Episode VIII and that the film will open on May 26, 2017, returning Star Wars to its normal May release schedule.
