Make some room and clear the stage, Universal Studios has released the first photo from the upcoming Jem & the Holograms movie, following the trend of 80’s animated series that have been adapted onto the big screen.
The announcement for plans to adapt the series first came out last March 2014, followed shortly by a teaser poster of the four principal cast members chosen to portray the all-girl glam rock band.
The film’s IMDb synopsis offers us this little blurb to chew on:
“In a hyper-linked social media age, an orphaned teenage girl, Jerrica Jem Benton, becomes an online recording sensation, and she and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt – one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles – in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.”
As music videos hit prominence in the 80’s thanks to MTV, Hasbro partnered up with screenwriter Christy Marx to bring about the adventures of a glam rock-star alter ego named Jem, produced by record label executive Jerrica Benton. The widely popular children’s animated series ran for three seasons between 1985 and 1988, bringing kids all over the world a unique format that incorporated music videos in each episode to complement the story.
Anybody else have childhood dreams of rockstardom thanks to Jem & The Holograms? I sure did. With those gorgeous red star earrings, please.
Story-wise, it remains to be seen whether the more fantastical aspects of the source material have made it in (still no word on the show’s memorable holographic supercomputer, Synergy) but I’m okay with waiting to see how this pans out.
Directed by Jon M. Chu (Step Up 2, GI Joe: Retaliation), Jem & The Holograms is slotted for it’s theatrical release on October 23, 2015 and stars Aubrey Peeples (Jem), Stefanie Scott (Kimber), Aurora Perrineau (Shana), Hayley Kiyoko (Aja) and Ryan Guzman (Rio).
