#NerdMusicMonday – Noelle Pico and “Here Be Monsters” + “Taste”

Welcome to #NerdMusicMonday, where we feature some of the greatest geek-inspired music to start your week on the right note. We also review geek-inspired music things that we see floating around the Internet, for better or worse.

You’ve seen her articles around our website and on Girls Got Game. It’s time that we recognize her for her real passion: music.

A classical pianist since the age of 5 and a songwriter since the age of 7, Noelle Pico is a geek, a poet, a storyteller, and a musician from the Philippines. Music was a huge aspect of her life in her early years, with Metropop submissions at 13 and 14, and a performance as a pianist for the Centennial Piano Concert. While it’s been a couple of years since her last gigs (some of you, in fact, may have caught her shows at Mag:net Katipunan or Conspiracy Bar between 2010 and 2013), Noelle does plan on returning to the scene now that life has gotten a little less crazy for her.

Of interest to us at What’s a Geek is the fact that she’s written music for her favorite fandoms. Teen Wolf fans, for one, might want to listen to “Here Be Monsters”, a work inspired by the television show and the fan work around it. This Tumblr post has a rough home recording of the song, together with its lyrics!

Let me tell you a secret: I have a dream.

I’ve held it close to my chest since the first time I saw this gorgeous piano behind a music shop window when I was three years old.

This is the same dream that danced on my tongue the day I finished my first song four years later as I sat in the backseat of the van my cousins and I were in.

I am twelve-years-old when The Eraserheads accept the coveted Moon Man for MTV’s Viewer’s Choice Award. And seeing this, I tell myself: I want that. I want to be there, one day.

It’s the wish I whisper every day: How I would love it if I could live and just make music for the rest of my life.

It’s not easy living in the urban jungle. Here, metal beasts roar through the streets in the early hours of the morning when I try to sleep because I keep the oddest hours at work. In the midst of all the traffic and the noise, I curl up in a sanctuary I have carved out for myself. My workshop.

I play. I sing.

Come join me. Let me tell you stories.

-“Concerning Music”, by Noelle Pico

Some of her songs have also been used for book trailers and comics too.  Her song “Hunger” was used for the Book Trailer of “Taste”, by Pinoy YA and romance writer Kate Evangelista.

That won’t be the last you’ll hear from Noelle. We don’t want to spoil anything, but we WILL say that exciting things are under development for her fans this year.

If you love what you just listened to, follow Noelle’s FB Page for updates! Her Bandcamp page is located here, and her page on Soundcloud has some older recordings of her work. She’s also got stuff posted on her Tumblr account.
