Funimation Entertainment has acquired the North American rights to the two-movie live-action adaptation of “Attack on Titan,” the bestselling manga by Hajime Isayama. It will also distribute the films in Central America  and South America. The company has also partnered with Tohi Co. for the Tuesday, July 14, world premiere of the first film at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, ahead of its Aug. 1 release in Japan.

Debuting in 2009, “Attack on Titan” is a post-apocalyptic fantasy set in a world where remorseless, flesh-eating giants have all but wiped out humanity, whose remnants are forced to live within a country surrounded by three enormous walls. The story initially centers on Eren Yeager, his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and their childhood friend Armin Alert, who join the military to fight the Titans after their hometown is attacked and Eren’s mother eaten.

The second “Attack on Titan” film, Attack on Titan: End of the World,” debuts Sept. 19 in Japan. No date has been announced for North American distribution.
