#KimTiu reviews the 2015 Primetime Emmy nominations!
The hashtag #KimTiu started as a joke between friends that has evolved into an awesomely weird (or is it weirdly awesome?) pop culture partnership. It is composed of WAG contributors Sean, the monotonous guy, and Kim, the guy who eats like Galactus. Kim: “Awards Season shenanigans! It’s that time of the year again and, like always, we begin with the dinosaur of all TV awards, the Primetime Emmys. Basically, Sean and I look at the nominations and respond with the corresponding amount of love, relief, snark, or confusion. This will be the first in a series of #KimTiu discussion articles. We’ll mostly handle awards shows but who knows what #KimTiu may tackle in the future?” Sean: “It’s another great year for TV with a lot of great nominees. While there are frequent (and justified) complaints that some great shows get unfairly snubbed (like Justified), the Emmy voters seem to have gotten this year’s list more “correct” this year.” Drama Series Sean: “I’m puzzled by the continued love that goes to Downton Abbey, which started as an excellent period drama and then quickly turned into a completely frustrating soapy mess as soon as it started its second season; the only thing keeping that show afloat has been its cast, and even they’re showing signs of fatigue. Season 5 only highlighted this more, with storylines being recycled, only with worse writing. The remaining nominees all deserve their spots, though it would have been nice to see The Americans and Justified nominated as well.” Kim: “I’m just as puzzled as you Sean; but then again, these are the same people who keep throwing trophies at Modern Family (more on that later). I think it’s just branding. There are several dramas out there in the TV landscape that could have easily replaced Downton Abbey’s paltry current season. Some of the Emmy voters probably just thought its enduring popularity deserved critical merit. I’m sure a lot of my fellow comic geeks are perplexed about the lack of Daredevil though, but I digress. It was probably on par with Season 3 of House of Cards, or just slightly better. It won’t help the Academy’s reputation of being anti-geek or anti-genre though, especially considering that Game of Thrones has the biggest fanbase here. The remaining nominees are all deserving, except for two in my opinion. I would replace Homeland with the currently superior national security drama The Americans. Also, despite being a huge fan of House of Cards, I found the third season lacking so I’d replace that with the amazing Netflix freshman drama Bloodline.”
